Studio Brief 02 - Design for Screen: Typeface Considerations

Sans serif typeface will be used throughout the whole app as it is more modern and contemporary which is relevant to the technology era. Most apps and digital devices use sans serif typeface as oppose to serif typefaces as it looks more up-to-date and youthful.

Body of text typeface

Gill Sans Regular
Although Gill Sans typeface is a sans serif typeface, it looks quite old and mellow due to the flicks on 'J' and 'Q'. The lowercase letters also look significantly smaller against the uppercase letters as opposed to different typefaces which makes it look slightly unusual.

Helvetica Regular
Helvetica is the most popular typeface and is very favourable as it was created to be a neutral-looking typeface so it would be fit for purpose on everything as it is un-biased and suppose to have no meaning.

Futura
Futura is another popular sans serif typeface as it is known to have sharp edges in the lettering. The typeface would not work well as the body of text for the app as the weight of the typeface is too heavy and will look unnecessary.

Helvetica will be used as the body of text for the app as it is a popular, neutral typeface and it would also mean that it would work well with whichever the display typeface is as it would not clash since it is uncomplicated.

Display typeface

Futura Bold
The Futura Bold typeface is inspired by the Bauhaus and geometric shapes. The typeface seems wide and blocky looking which makes the letters look chubby, especially the lowercase letters.

Helvetic Neue Condensed Bold
This typeface is quite bold and heavily weighted but would work well with the Helvetica body typeface as it is from the same typeface family but, it would seem boring and generic to choose for the design.

DIN Condensed Bold
The height of this typeface seems taller than other typeface designs which makes it appear more assertive. The design on this isn't as bold as the other two which is preferred as it doesn't look too harsh.

DIN Condensed Bold was considered for the logo typeface as it was the most appropriate for the app as it is supposed to be a platform to manage all parcel deliveries so it has condensed information in one place. The typeface looks confident and not too bold so it appears more lively and composed.
