Studio Brief 02 - Design for Screen: Interim crit and One-to-one crit

Solution - To create an app where you can track parcels no matter what courier it is. It will allow you to contact courier companies/delivery drivers in case there is a problem with your delivery or if you're not at home and you need to tell the driver where to deliver your parcel. The app will also allow you to show whether you're at home or not so it will have an on and offline feature. This would allow the delivery driver to see whether you're in or not so they can automatically deliver to a safe place/neighbour. The app will be free to download as the client are the courier apps.

Is this an effective resolution? Why?
  • Yes, as companies such as Newlook offer booking slots & text many currently don't. Having an ETA would be really useful.
  • Yes, but some people may not have smartphones so and online version may be needed.
  • Yes I think this would be beneficial to stop people having to wait at home or miss a package.
  • Yes as the estimated delivery is very vague and I hate having to wait around at home.
  • Yes, please give me something like this!
  • Yes! It's helpful to have everything in one place.
  • Yes! Because you can keep track on it all the time.
  • It saves the hassle of going onto your emails > finding & clicking the email > finding & clicking the link > copy & paste reference code blah blah blah...
  • Yes, finding the barcode for items can be a nightmare if you received the email days ago. Also would be go for store collections + Drop offs.
  • Yes this is something relevant and useful. Being able to see the progress + be able to contact the driver could make it easier for you and driver.
  • An app would be really useful! Progress of parcels would be good to see. Apps like Depop could link to it too.
Is there anything I could add/other problems you find when receiving a parcel?
  • Maybe return policies? - Could be useful instead of heading to go on the website. Maybe discounted delivery as a marketing technique?
  • Oversized parcels.
  • Make it easy to return it?
  • Return policies, tracker to see where the vehicle is.
  • Maybe you could write which neighbours you would NOT want your package to be taken to.
  • What to do with the product if I am not at home?
  • Maybe have a feature that allows the user to meet/pick up them from a different location; near a workplace? Etc.
  • Returns information/refund information
  • Oversized parcels can be problematic as they often send it to the Post Office for you to collect - Organise another slot when you're available.
  • App links to the actual postman/couriers phone so you can let them know if you're not in between certain hours and tell them where to put the parcel instead/which neighbour to leave them with.
Having read the feedback for the Design for Screen idea, most people liked the idea of having an app where you can track all parcels that you receive on one platform rather than having to look through all your emails and downloading each courier app. Someone had suggested that people may not have smart phones and a website may be needed. This has been considered however, the app is meant to be for someone on-the-go/people that work/students that are not always at home. An app will be more effective than a website because it is aimed at people over 16 and in modern day society, people usually carry their smartphones.

When asking for feedback for anything else that could be added to the app/any problems people face when receiving parcels, people have suggested to add return policies/discounts. The concept of app is to simply track all your incoming parcels on one platform. Having return policies will be really difficult because obviously different companies have different return policies and it would require a lot of information from different companies and it can make it overwhelming for the user to read. This would not be a wise as the client will not be the retailers, it will be the courier services so it wouldn't make sense to do that. Some people have also suggested parcels to be taken to local Post Office's if you're not in, this could work however, not all couriers would be able to do this, it would depend on the courier and some charge extra costs. This is why the app will allow you to have a 'safe place' location if you're not in or neighbours to deliver to. The idea of noting which weight to deliver/avoid is a useful idea as it makes sense if you're not keen on a particular neighbour.

One-to-one crit
When having a one-to-one crit, they suggested a range of pictograms/symbols should be used for the app. She also suggest that that I should have it so the app would automatically detect whether you're at home or not from the location settings.

The idea of the pictograms on the app would be effective however, the app is aimed at people over the age of 16, even though younger people may understand the pictograms, people who are older and more mature may find it more difficult to understand the pictograms and find it complicated. Having the app automatically detecting whether you're home or not so that it will automatically put your status online is a really great idea because it would be more efficient for the user especially when they get to come home for a lunch break etc... They don't have to manually turn their status on.
