OUGD505 - Product Range Distribution: "Appropriation" Seminar & Workshop
The session was about cultural appropriation and we were told to cut out pages out of magazines and newspapers to show our own version of cultural appropriation.
My idea was to use imagery of Asian women in their Islamic clothing, Native American clothing and Japanese clothing and stick of faces of white models to show cultural appropriation of how some people dress in society even though it is meaningless to them. It shows that people are uniformed and can be offensive to the race/culture that they appear to want to look like. The 'Sisters of the struggle' is to reinforce the struggle people show from certain cultures when they see someone not of that race/uncultured wearing clothing that is supposed to be sacred to them.
Some of the comments I had received were positive however, I did get a comment about it being offensive but I am not saying that it is right nor am I agreeing with it - I'm just showing how people act/appear in society when they are un-iformed and how it can be hurtful to people of that ethnic group.
