Yorkshire Sculpture Park Logo Design

As most of the sculptures were quite simple, I wanted my logo to also be simple because I think by overdoing it gives a false representation of the sculptures in the park. I tried to make a silhouette of each design so that I could put the logo into it without it being overcrowded by different patterns and colours. All my design work were made on Photoshop using a magnetic line tool and by using the images as a guideline for the sculptures.

The first three designs that I made were sculptures made by Barbara Hepworth. I think the designs look too simple and boring. I wanted to add colour to the sculptures but like the original sculpture, they are one solid colour, which is back. I feel if I used a different colour, it would give a false representation of the sculptures so I decided that these three designs wouldn't work out because they lack interest.

I then tried incorporating the sculptures into their exiting logo. I quite like the first three but still, I thought I could make an even better logo. I like it because it ties into their exiting logo which will be more familiar to the public. The fourth one, I placed all three sculptures inside the logo but I felt that the placement looked all wrong and plain at the top as opposed to the bottom of the logo. The final one, I don't like because it looks too much like a gravestone which would definitely not represent the park. I did experiment with it though by putting the other two sculptures inside the holes and added the 'YSP' but I still didn't like it.

I thought it would be quite interesting to use one of the animals for my logo instead of a architectural sculpture. I didn't do much to this as I already felt it would look odd as a logo after I made a silhouette out of it. This is because it looks weird and uninteresting as I don't think it would represent YSP well enough.
I found another sculpture that looked interesting in which I could make a silhouette from which was more colourful. I chose this as my final design because the shape of the sculpture looks simple and quirky as it is slightly tilted. The first one, I placed the logo horizontally. Although I liked it, I wanted to try out different placements so I linked the letters up closer together and made them to spell YSP vertically. I prefer this one better as the logo typeface itself is made to look like a sculpture which is a perfect representation of the park and what it inspires. I used the same colouring as on the original sculpture because I thought it looked good anyway, the green could also represent the greenery of the park.

Feedback:
  • Symbol almost dwarf the logo - but using it smaller would make the proportions better. Good incorporation of Barbara Hepworths designs. Almost a bit too angular? Softer corners would make it look more natural. Good work though
  • Like the initial shapes research
  • Might be harder to read on a smaller scale
  • Good range of starting points
  • Identified that Barbara Hepworth is an iconic and simplistic sculptress
  • Experiment a little more
  • Excellent to test logo alongside existing logo type
  • Would be good to see sketches and design development
  • Test at different scales
  • Take designs further
  • Good range of compositional variations
  • Using existing logo to maintain usual language of YSP
  • Good visual representation of sculptures
  • Two tone colour works the best
  • I think the letters that go across the bottom of the image (YSP) looks good as it is more clear and effective
  • Simple but effective
  • Needed more to the presentation, very quick
  • Like the two tones of colour
  • Great experimentation with sculpture design
  • Good colour choices & how you made the letters into a sculpture was good
  • Maybe more minimal
  • Try more ideas of colour
  • Two tones work
  • Good ideas
  • Great use of negative space
  • Lots of good development and ideas
  • Colour scheme works very well - good complimentary colours together
  • Nice use of current logo
  • Very detailed scale wise
  • Good representation of sculpture
