Design Principles

Gestalt Principles

Meaning 'shape, form' and defining an area of psychology that aims to understand our ability to perceive and organise the word.

"The whole is other than the sum of the parts." - Kurt Koffka.

That is, that our perceptions can be more than merely what is presented to us.

Continuation - our instinct is to follow what we perceive to be a line or a path.

Law of Prägnaz - "People will perceive and interpret ambitious or complex images as the simplest form(s) possible."

A fundamental principle of Gestalt: we prefer things that are simple, clear and complex.

Closure - be thought of as a glue holding elements together. It's about tendency to seek and find patterns, to understand. The key to closure is providing enough information so that the eye can fill in the rest.

Symmetry and order - symmetry gives us a feeling of solidarity and order, which we tend to seek. It is out nature to impose order and chaos.

The Sandpit - Tilt Shift Video. This video was filmed of everyday life in New York City. The short film by Sam O'Hare, was created using an effect from the final outcome of the film although he tried to use a camera to create the miniature look. I found this short film very interesting and inspiring as it confused me at first because I thought that it was created using miniatures when really, it was made in real life with real people and I found that hard to believe.
